Gelsenkirchen Airfield is home to 14 Boeing E-3A Airborne Warning & Control System (AWACS) aircraft. NATO raised security at the base last week due to a "possible threat" and sent personnel home as a precaution. Both the airfield and NATO headquarters in Brussels dismissed the idea of drone flights.
Several drones were spotted in northern Germany in August. German security authorities are investigating where these drones could have been launched from – probably from Russian ships in the North
and Baltic Seas, or from Kaliningrad.
