About 200 thousand people were taken in freight cars to remote areas of the USSR. Many of them did not survive the deportation.
Ukraine honors the memory of the victims of the 1944 deportation and considers it an act of genocide against the Crimean Tatar people.
Russia is trying to show that there are no Crimean Tatars in Crimea by banning mourning events on May 18 and other public activities.

Ukrainian truckers protested on Kyiv-Odesa highway over changes in mobilization
According to National Police spokeswoman Berezhna, the protest was organized by international truck drivers. The reason for the protest, she said, was that under the new law on mobilization, they allegedly will not be able to travel abroad.
"So the truck drivers held a peaceful protest, stood on both sides of the Kyiv-Odesa highway in Kirovohrad region, did not block traffic, the roads were passable. There were up to 100 trucks, now there are about 15 left," Berezhna said.
