About 200 thousand people were taken in freight cars to remote areas of the USSR. Many of them did not survive the deportation.
Ukraine honors the memory of the victims of the 1944 deportation and considers it an act of genocide against the Crimean Tatar people.
Russia is trying to show that there are no Crimean Tatars in Crimea by banning mourning events on May 18 and other public activities.
