π 5 FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT SUSTAINABLE ENERGY
π‘38% of the global electricity in 2021 was generated by renewable energy sources
The sustainable energy sources, such as hydroelectric, solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal energy, produced 38% of the electricity in the world in 2021, which became an absolute record and surpassed the amount of coal-generated energy. This way, despite the unprecedented 9% increase in the same year, the coal usage was cut short at 36.5%
π‘ Sustainable energy ensures more jobs for women than fossil fuels
The findings of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)βs 2020 Annual Review suggest that 32% of the employees in the sphere of renewable energy is female, which is 11% more than in the fossil fuel sectors. However, the report outlines the importance of promoting female workforce in scientific fields in order to create equal opportunities for all professionals.
π‘ Solar energy has been named the most abundant source of energy on the Earth
The solar energy is so powerful and abundant that it would be enough for humans to harness an hour of solar energy to satisfy the humankindβs power needs for a year. In this case the usage of non-renewable resources of energy, namely natural gas, coal and oil would be completely abandoned.
π‘ Solar energy usage was first discovered almost 200 years ago
In 1839 the scientist named Alexandre Edmond Becquerel discovered the Β«photovoltaic effectΒ», meaning that electricity could be generated from direct sunlight. More than a hundred years later, in 1941, became an inventor of the solar cell. Soon NASA adopted solar technology in the 1950s and implemented it aboard of the oldest satellite in orbit, the satellite Vanguard.
π‘ Geothermal energy was first used by the Romans centuries ago
The Romans were the first to take advantage of the geothermal energy. The design of their homes enabled the warm air to move under floors and inside the walls, thus heating buildings. Another example of the geothermal energy usage by the Romans is the creation of communal baths at hot springs.
