As a key actor in Disaster Risk Management in Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) continues to implement anticipatory action interventions, including the ongoing project “Strengthening Institutional Disaster Preparedness in Ethiopia” funded by DG ECHO.
Anticipatory actions aim to prevent or mitigate the impact of predicted hazards - saving lives and livelihoods before a crisis fully unfolds - while reducing pressure on already stretched humanitarian resources.
From 8th to 10th April 2025, ERCS conducted a training on anticipatory action for over 20 participants drawn from ERCS, EDRMC, and various regional bureaus (including Agriculture and Health) from Tigray, Somali, and Afar regions. The training aimed to build the knowledge and capacity of participants—most of whom were government representatives - to support the advancement of anticipatory action efforts in their respective regions, where such initiatives are still in their early stages.

In response to the urgent needs of families affected by recent natural disasters, the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS), with support from DG ECHO Fund, distributed 633 tarpaulins to displaced families from Dulcha district and the Kesem Sugar Factory area. These families were forced to flee their homes due to an earthquake and severe windstorms that struck Addis Raey and Daido IDP camps in Zone 3, Afar Region, in late March 2025 - leaving many without adequate shelter.
Additionally, through the Earthquake Response DREF project supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), ERCS provided support to 2,000 earthquake-affected households residing across seven IDP camps - three in Zone 3 of the Afar Region and four in East Shewa Zone of Oromia Region.
The distributed items included: tarpaulins, sleeping mats, blankets, kitchen sets, jerrycans, water treatment chemicals, buckets, and dignity kits.
ERCS remains committed to reaching the most vulnerable and ensuring dignity and protection in times of crisis.
