“The war has hurt us. Even though we didn’t die, it has left us in trouble.”

Alem recounts with a steady voice the trauma of being displaced not once, but twice. Fleeing the war in Kobo, she and her husband carried their children - one a baby, the other ten years old - on foot to Mersa, 80 kilometers away. “We stayed there for almost two years,” she says. The memory of those years is etched with hardship, but also with moments of grace from her neighbors. “The people of Kobo are nice. They helped me. They didn’t ask me to pay house rent for three years, saying, ‘How can you pay when you have children and no job?’”

That sense of community helped her family survive - but survival is not enough. For Alem, the cash support from the Red Cross brought hope and a chance to rebuild. As one of the beneficiaries who received 27,000 Birr in three rounds, she used the cash not just to meet urgent needs, but to invest in her family’s future. “With the cash that came to us, I bought chickens and two goats,” she says. These animals symbolize more than just food or income - they are a step toward stability. “I also bought teff to feed my family. Now, with Easter coming, I’ll use the last round of 10,000 Birr to buy food and other things we need for the holiday.”

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS), in collaboration with the Netherlands Red Cross, German Red Cross, Danish Red Cross, and Austrian Red Cross, and with funding from the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), has been implementing a vital project: “Addressing Basic Needs of Vulnerable Populations Affected by Conflict and Displacement in Amhara, Tigray, and Benishangul-Gumuz.” This integrated humanitarian response has been helping thousands of conflict-affected families, like Alem’s, regain a foothold in life.

As a key actor in Disaster Risk Management in Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) continues to implement anticipatory action interventions, including the ongoing project “Strengthening Institutional Disaster Preparedness in Ethiopia” funded by DG ECHO.

Anticipatory actions aim to prevent or mitigate the impact of predicted hazards - saving lives and livelihoods before a crisis fully unfolds - while reducing pressure on already stretched humanitarian resources.

From 8th to 10th April 2025, ERCS conducted a training on anticipatory action for over 20 participants drawn from ERCS, EDRMC, and various regional bureaus (including Agriculture and Health) from Tigray, Somali, and Afar regions. The training aimed to build the knowledge and capacity of participants—most of whom were government representatives - to support the advancement of anticipatory action efforts in their respective regions, where such initiatives are still in their early stages.
