✅ Taboo or Teachable ? Let’s Rethink Sensitive Topics in ELT 💬

❓ What topics should we *avoid* in class? And how can we still create space for critical thinking, empathy, and inclusion? 🌎🤝

🔎 In ELT, we often follow the PARSNIP principle — an acronym that stands for 🔤

🚨 Politics
🍷 Alcohol

💊 Narcotics
📢 -ISMs (e.g., racism, sexism, nationalism)
🐷 Pork

These topics are usually left out of coursebooks and lessons to avoid causing offense or discomfort among learners. But does avoiding them help — or limit — our classrooms? 🤔

Let’s look at the *why* behind each one 🔤

🗳 **Politics

– Highly divisive. Stick to neutral, global topics that encourage open-mindedness.

🍺 Alcohol

– Cultural norms vary. Promote inclusive alternatives like hobbies or health.

🤲📿 Religion

– Deeply personal. Highlight values and cultural celebrations without promoting a faith.

🚫 Sex

– Keep it respectful and age-appropriate. Explore communication or relationships instead.

🚫 Narcotics

– Avoid glamorizing. Focus on well-being and making informed choices.

🧠 isms

– Too ideological or polarizing. Choose topics that unite, not divide.

🥓 Pork

– Be culturally sensitive in food-related topics and visuals.

💡 My take?
We don’t always have to *completely* avoid these topics. With the right timing, student trust, and thoughtful scaffolding, even “taboo” themes can spark meaningful learning 🌱✨

Instead of banning, let’s balance 🧘 🔤

✅ Build trust
✅ Create a safe space
✅ Teach with empathy and awareness
