A Poison Tree
BY WILLIAM BLAKE
I was angry with my friend;
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.
And I waterd it in fears,
Night & morning with my tears:
And I sunned it with smiles,
And with soft deceitful wiles.
And it grew both day and night.
Till it bore an apple bright.
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine.
And into my garden stole,
When the night had veild the pole;
In the morning glad I see;
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, donβt deal in lies,
Or being hated, donβt give way to hating,
And yet donβt look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dreamβand not make dreams your master;
If you can thinkβand not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth youβve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build βem up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: βHold on!β
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kingsβnor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty secondsβ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything thatβs in it,
Andβwhich is moreβyouβll be a Man, my son!

#1 Methods: Overview
π In this series of posts you will get basic knowledge of foreign language teaching methods.
β‘οΈ No one can say what exactly counts as a foreign language teaching method and there is no fixed number of methods. We shall look at four basic methods more closely:
πΉ Grammar-Translation (GTM)
πΉ Direct Method (DM)
πΉ Audio-Lingual Method (ALM)
πΉ Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)
β Why should we know these methods?
βοΈ Knowing different methods is like having a map. It tells us where we stand and where else we can go. In our teaching we become aware of what we do and what else we can do.

#3 Methods: The Grammar-Translation Method
π In this series of posts you will get basic knowledge of foreign language teaching methods.
β‘οΈ GTM is the most traditional method. Teachers explain grammar rules and vocabulary to their students and let them translate. This is assumed to help students prepare for exams.
π₯Έ Whatβs good about it?
βοΈ Students can gain a lot of knowledge in the process. Teachers care to make them understand and procedures are systematic. Itβs also good for testing.
π€ Whatβs bad about it?
βοΈ Thereβs no foreign language environment. The teacher is the boss and students donβt learn to communicate. It can also be boring and inefficient, especially for children.

#4 Methods: Direct Method
β‘οΈ The Direct Method is also known as Natural Method. It aims to provide a direct way to the target language without translation. No mother tongue should be spoken in the class and the foreign language should be learned in the same natural way as oneβs mother tongue.
β Whatβs good about it?
βοΈ The method focuses on oral skills first and motivates students with real-life learning using authentic materials. Language learning becomes a pleasant experience as it is student-centred.
β Whatβs bad about it?
βοΈ Low-level students and children may struggle when they are forbidden to use their mother tongue. The focus on oral skills may also not suit students with higher learning needs.

#1 Methods: Overview π In this series of posts you will get basic knowledge of foreign language teaching methods. β‘οΈ No one can say what exactly counts as a foreign language teaching method and there is no fixed number of methods. We shall look at fourβ¦
#5 Methods: Audiolingual Method
β‘οΈ The Audiolingual Method was developed in the mid-20th century as a scientific way to learn a foreign language. Materials are designed by experts and students learn by repeating grammar structures with changing vocabulary. The aim is to speed up grammar learning and give students a good foundation.
β Whatβs good about it?
βοΈ The power of habit is used in this method and it is very systematic. You can learn grammar without thinking about rules. You may not even need a teacher, a book or computer program can also teach you.
β Whatβs bad about it?
βοΈ It can get quite dull and mechanical as you only repeat but never express yourself. The materials lack real interaction and therefore seem inauthentic and meaningless.

#6 Methods: Communicative Language Teaching
β‘οΈ Communicate Language Teaching (CLT) is the most modern among language teaching method. It is 100% learner-centred and the teacherβs role is that of a facilitator who creates communicative situations for the students. They are given meaningful topics and communicative tasks and receive plenty of feedback.
β Whatβs good about it?
βοΈ Students learn to express themselves and the whole process is enjoyable. They get a lot of practice. Meanwhile, they learn not only to speak a foreign language but also develop their life skills, i.e. social and communication skills.
β Whatβs bad about it?
βοΈ CLT needs good teachers who are qualified and creative enough. It may also not work with unmotivated students and there can be problems with discipline. The method is also rooted in Western culture and may just not work universally.
