Sanchin – Abdominal Breathing – Core and Tanden

“In Karate, Seika Tanden or using Hara is literally bracing your core or creating IAP (Interabdominal Pressure).”
Sanchin Kata is an isometric workout that has been passed down via the Nahate system over the ages. In Sanchin, Fukushiki Kokyu, or abdominal breathing, is utilized to maintain a healthy physical and mental state, with the most essential benefit being that breathing provides the strength to perform technique.
Our spine is not held up just by muscles working individually to contract and hold the spine rather those muscles working together in concrete to create pressure inside the abdomen.
What happens is the inside pressure pushes against the spine and then your musculature on the outside pushes against in the opposite direction, creating stability.
When we learn how to use this properly, it’s our natural weightlifting belt which is actually using Hara or engaging Seika Tanden which we should have it in Karate and Sanchin training.
Training this allows us to create a stable anchor, or fixed point or connection, for our shoulders and our hips to pull from, to create efficient movement.
The core is not meant to be an engine, rather a transmission of forces.

Sen no Sen, 先の先 : To anticipate an attack and to take the initiative. "Sen no Sen" is that you know what your opponent is going to do so you will strike before your opponent moves.

Sen means "before". It is also a shortened form of sen-te (literally "beforehand") and typically refers to "an attack" in Karate and Budo terms.

Go no Sen, 後の先 (post-initiative): After the attack, block/evade and counterattack. The ‘Go’ (後) in ‘Go no sen’ means ‘after’. Quite literally, immediately after you’ve been attacked, let’s say with a punch, or indeed a flurry of punches – which you have effectively blocked/evaded – you counterattack.

Go no Sen is not just counter-attack. Go no sen is a mental state, a level of concentration assumed during combat. It is more correct to say that it is harmonization with the very movement of attack, not just defense.

Sensen no Sen, (先先の先: Superior initiative): seizing the initiative by attacking first.
Sensing your opponent's intention to attack, you take the initiative, immediately launching a pre-emptive strike. "Also called 懸の先 Ken no sen". This strategy prescribes creating an advantage over your opponent by taking the initiative in advance of your opponent's actions/ intents.

Mitsu no sen, “三 つの 先” (three initiatives) refers to the three ways or timing in which we can disrupt our opponent and create an opening and/or opportunity to strike or attack or respond or react to our opponent’s intentions.

Aragaki ha Unshu (雲手), literally “cloud hands”, It contains many intricate hand techniques, such as the Ippon Nukite (one finger strike) in the opening sequence. Unshu was created by Seisho Aragaki sometime around 1860-1870. Aragaki was a Japanese and Chinese language interpreter to the Shuri court, and a master of monk fist and white crane styles. It is somewhat a condensation of other katas (e.g., Bassai, Kosokun, Jion, Wanshu, Jitte, Chinto and Niseishi), hence it is essential to have mastered these before practising Unshu.

Chatan Yara Kushanku (北谷 屋良 ) Kata

kata Kushanku version of master Yara from Chatan village
Master Yara was born in 1760 in Okinawa, in the village of Chatan. In 1772 he traveled together with his uncle in Fuzhou in Fukien province (China), where allegedly he stayed 20 years. There he studied Chinese Chuan Fa, Qi Gong, fighting with sticks. Upon his return to Okinawa he worked as an interpreter.
It is not clear what sort of master Yara actually taught or at what this style kata was based. Recorded only that taught kata Kushanku. In addition kata Kushanku master Yara has left us more Kobudo Kata Chatan Yara no kon, Chatan Yara no Sai and…
