平常心, Heijōshin, means keeping a calm and balanced mind in every situation. In karate, it means staying relaxed, focused, and in control during training, kata, kumite, competition, and teaching. You do not panic under pressure, become careless after success, or lose control because of fear or anger. With Heijōshin, your breathing stays natural, your body stays free from unnecessary tension, and your decisions become clear and effective.

I had the honor of meeting Izumi Miyawaki Sensei, one of Japan’s respected Ikebana artists and teachers, dedicated to the traditional Japanese art of floral arrangement.
The day before the tournament, she arrived at the venue at 7:00 a.m. and worked continuously until 3:00 p.m., without stopping even for a meal, creating the Ikebana arrangements for us.
Her work reflected far more than floral design. Every branch, flower, line, and open space showed balance, discipline, sensitivity, and years of refined study.
When her work was complete, she simply thanked us and quietly left.
Her dedication, humility, and devotion to her art left a strong impression on me.
She, too, is someone who walks the 道, the Way.
