Nipaipo is an advanced Shitoryu kata with strong roots in Chinese White Crane boxing. Master Kenwa Mabuni learned the kata from Master Go Kenki, then simplified it and taught it to his students. Nipaipo combines flowing circular actions with sudden explosive techniques, rapid open-hand combinations, evasive body movements, trapping, controlling, and short-range striking. Nipaipo is one of the four Shitei, or mandatory, kata. Practising and mastering this kata is important in Shitō-ryū Karate.

Matsukaze (松風) Kata
Matsukaze 松風 (“Wind in the Pines”). Master Kenwa Mabuni renamed the kata Matsukaze from its original name Wankan, a kata practiced in Okinawa's Tomari region . Matsukaze is considered an intermediate kata in Shito-ryu. It includes both attacking and defensive strategies performed simultaneously at various stages. It is stated that the phrase "Wind in the Pines" implies strength but adaptability in the face of adversity, similar to a pine tree on top of a mountain facing strong winds. As a result, all movement is forward, either driving the opponent backwards or remaining still.

Seipai (十八)
Seipai kata in Shitoryu represents a refined synthesis of Okinawan traditions, originally transmitted from Kanryu Higaonna and rooted in the principles of Naha-te, including strong stances, breath control, and internal power. When Kenwa Mabuni inherited this kata, he preserved its essence while expressing it through his broader training in both Naha-te and Shuri-te, introducing subtle adaptations that blended structure with speed and fluidity. The result is a uniquely Shitoryu interpretation that combines grounded power with agility, where techniques flow naturally and self-defense applications appear practical, direct, and effective, demonstrating a harmonious balance between hard and soft, and between rooted strength and dynamic movement.

Proper arm positioning plays an important role in the effectiveness and efficiency of karate techniques. Correct alignment of the shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands creates stronger body connection, better stability, greater speed, and more effective transfer of power. Proper positioning also reduces unnecessary muscular tension and allows the movement to work naturally with the body. From both mechanical and physical perspectives, correct structure improves the quality, control, and effectiveness of karate kihon.

Matsumura Rohai (松村鷺牌)
Matsumura Rohai is an old kata created by Matsumura Sokon, the chief martial arts instructor to the Ryukyu Kingdom in the 19th century. Preserved in Shito-ryu and certain Shorin-ryu lineages, it reflects the influence of Tomari-te techniques within the Shuri-te tradition. The name Rohai is often interpreted as “vision of a heron,” referring to the kata’s signature one-leg stances and upright posture, which demand exceptional balance, precision, and timing.
Distinct from the Tomari master Matsumora Kosaku’s version, Matsumura Rohai is characterized by its measured rhythm, subtle changes in direction, and defensive counterattacks. The kata emphasizes stability in single-leg postures and sharp control in arm techniques.

Wanshū (ワンシュー, also 汪輯)
The name Wanshū (汪輯) means "Wang's Series (or Form)" and refers to the diplomat Wang (1621 – 1689). Wang was the leader of a large ambassadorial mission from China, sent by the Qing government in 1683 to the village of Tomari.
The Wanshū kata was either created by Wang or composed by his students and named in tribute to him. There are two major versions of Wanshū kata: one taught by Master Ankō Itosu and one practiced and introduced in the Tomari region.
The Wanshū kata shown in this video is considered an Itosu-kei kata, meaning it was either created or primarily passed down by Ankō Itosu, although its origins are in Tomari-te.
Wanshū is also translated as "Oar in Deep Water," which may refer to the movements in which the karate-ka lunges in for an attack and quickly leaps away, like an oar plunged deep into the water and quickly emerging as the stroke is completed.

By incorporating the arm rotator machine into your workout routine alongside your karate sessions, you can achieve stronger, more stable shoulders, enhancing forearm muscle development. This contributes to overall fitness and muscular development, helping to build and tone the arm and shoulder muscles. Enhanced forearm strength can lead to improved performance and endurance. Regular use of the machine can also increase the endurance of the forearm muscles, enabling longer periods of activity without fatigue.
