Suparinpei (壱百零八) Kata

Suparinpei (壱百零八, also knows as Pechurin and Hyakuhachiho) is one of the original Kata from RyuRuKo Sensei while he was in Fuzchou in the Fukien Province of Southern China and was handed down to Kanryo Higaonna Sensei. Visually it is similar to the Chinese White Crane Kata and the Kempo Kata of the Dragon! Its Okinawan counterpart is Pechurin.

Superinpei is the number 108 in Chinese and the Kata itself is sometimes called or translated as;
1. 108 Hands
2. The final 108 hands
3. 108 Techniques.

And has special significance in Buddhism.

Superinpei is Naha-te’s longest Kata containing more applications and techniques than any other Naha-te Kata and uses classic breathing however silent [Ibuki]. Yes still can executed with perfect form and end in Zanshin. Many of the techniques in this Kata can also be found in earlier Naha-te Kata (Seisan and Sanseiru, etc…). Master Kanazawa of Shotokan and Keiyo University of Tokyo, add this kata to their associations and called it Hyakuhachiho.

Sanseiru（三十六 "36 Hands") is an advanced kata
originating from the Naha-te lineage of Okinawan karate. It's characterized by powerful stances, particularly Sanchin Dachi, and focuses on close-range combat and grappling techniques. The kata emphasizes generating power from the core (hara) and utilizing internal strength, evident in its strong breathing and dynamic tension. Sanseiru is influenced by Chinese martial arts, reflecting the historical connections of Naha-te.

Shitoryu Karate

Pt. 1

Shito-ryu Karate carries the legacy of two masters. Founded in 1931 by Kenwa Mabuni, it blends the core of Okinawan Karate. Mabuni trained under two great teachers and honored them in the style’s name: Shi from Ankō Itosu, who refined powerful kata and spread Karate through education, and Tō from Kanryō Higaonna, the Naha-te master known for strong stances, circular motion, and controlled breathing.

Pt. 2

Mabuni preserved centuries of tradition while uniting Itosu’s speed and precision with Higaonna’s strength and flow. From the Shuri-te lineage it inherits quick linear techniques and mobile stances. From the Naha-te lineage it gains rooted stances, heavy power, and deep breathing methods. He also drew influence from Master Go Kenki of the White Crane system and from the Tomari-te tradition. The result is a balanced art: speed with power, fluidity with stability.

Shito-ryu is famous for its breadth. With more than 50 kata, it serves as a living encyclopedia of Okinawan Karate. Its stances range from low and grounded to high and natural, allowing smooth adaptation for both kata and kumite.

Mabuni’s vision continued through his son Kenei Mabuni and masters such as Manzo Iwata, carried forward by Shitokai and the World Shito-ryu Karate Federation. Recognized as one of the four major styles by the Japan Karate-do Federation, Shito-ryu thrives across Europe, the Asia-Pacific, Eurasia, Africa, and the Americas. Its champions excel in both kata and kumite, proving the style’s mix of speed, power, and precision.

Breathing in Shito-ryu is more than inhaling and exhaling. Ibuki and Nagare breathing build focus and power, linking mind and body to every technique. Shito-ryu remains a true fusion of Shuri-te and Naha-te, with added influence from White Crane and Tomari-te, keeping Kenwa Mabuni’s legacy alive in traditional, budo, and sport karate worldwide.
