They used to say running is the mother of all sports.
But times have changed—and so has the science.

These days, we know that muscle is a longevity organ.
Whatever your sport, whatever your physical activity,
weight training isn’t optional—it’s essential.

It builds strength, protects joints, improves posture,
and keeps your body young and resilient.

Here’s a glimpse of my session today at the gym—
staying strong, staying ready.

Let’s keep lifting. 💪

Naihanchi Shodan (ナイハンチ初段) Kata

Naihanchi (ナイハンチ) is performed in Naihanchi-Dachi, which translates to "Internal Divided Conflict" or "Inner Tension Stance." This kata focuses on in-fighting techniques and consists of three modern forms: Shodan, Nidan, and Sandan. There is some debate among researchers about the origins of these forms; some believe Nidan and Sandan were created by Master Anko Itosu, while others think they were originally one kata that was divided into three parts, possibly due to space constraints.

The practice of Naihanchi emphasizes the development of strong stances, efficient lateral movement, and powerful strikes. Practitioners focus on stability, posture, and the proper execution of techniques, which include basic punches, blocks, and a special leg movement called "Nami Gaeshi." The kata's linear pattern, moving side-to-side, helps build foundational skills essential for more advanced training and application in self-defense scenarios.

Bodhidharma (also known as Daruma in Japanese) was an Indian Buddhist monk who lived in the 5th or 6th century. According to legend, he traveled to China and introduced Chan (Zen) Buddhism, emphasizing meditation and self-realization.

Bodhidharma is often depicted as a fierce, bearded monk with a strong will and intense gaze. He's credited with teaching physical and mental discipline to the Shaolin monks, influencing the development of martial arts and Zen Buddhism in China and beyond. His teachings focus on inner strength, self-awareness, and spiritual growth.

Hanging leg raises on a chin-up bar are a great way to train your core. When you lift your legs up high—especially if you go all the way to the bar—you’re really working your lower abs, hip flexors, and stabilizer muscles. You’ll also feel it in your upper abs, obliques, and even your shoulders and lats as they help keep you steady.

It’s a tough move, but super effective for building real core strength and control. The more slow and controlled you go, the more your core has to work—and that’s where the real benefits kick in.

Training using overloads, such as wearing wrist weights, has various advantages for improving physical fitness, strength, and speed in hand movements. One of the most significant benefits is the incremental resistance it provides, which is necessary for increasing muscle strength and endurance. When muscles face higher resistance, they adapt by becoming stronger and more resilient. This process, called as hypertrophy, results in greater muscle mass and better muscular endurance, which can improve performance in a variety of physical activities as well as karate arms techniques.

Kunshi no Ken – The Gentleman’s Fist in the Teachings of Kenwa Mabuni

Part 1

Kenwa Mabuni (1889–1952), founder of Shitō-ryū Karate-dō, taught that Karate must be guided by moral responsibility. One of his core principles was Kunshi no Ken (君子の拳), which means The Fist of a Gentleman. Kunshi no Ken is the link between strength and virtue. A discipline that shapes both the body and the character.
Kunshi (君子) is a person of noble character, with self-discipline and respect for others. Ken (拳) means fist. Together they describe a fighter whose skills serve justice and protection, not aggression.
Kunshi no Ken – The Gentleman’s Fist in the Teachings of Kenwa Mabuni

Part 2

Practical Application

You apply Kunshi no Ken in training and life:
>Use skill only when necessary to protect yourself or others.
>Avoid unnecessary violence.
>Show restraint even when you have the advantage.
>Defend the weak and prevent harm.
>Train the mind and body equally.
>Keep respect, patience, and humility in daily behavior.
>Think before acting, and act with precision when required.

Why It Matters Today

Karate competition, rank, and strength have value, but they are not the highest goal. Without the discipline of Kunshi no Ken, skill becomes empty. This principle makes Karate a path of responsibility, not only a method of fighting.

Kettlebell workouts are both dynamic and functional; by including kettlebell routines, you may improve your general strength, agility, and endurance. Additionally, kettlebell training increases core stability and balance, which are necessary for maintaining good posture and control. Swings and snatches with kettlebells strengthen the muscles of the arms, shoulders, and core, resulting in increased strength, speed, and coordination in your punches, blocks, and strikes.

"The Four Fundamental Principles of Budō"

In Budō no Yotsu no Gensoku (武道の四つの原則), the fourth principle, "Shi – Riki" (力), refers to power in the context of martial arts. In Budō, power is not just physical strength, but the integration of body mechanics, mental focus, and timing to achieve maximum effect with minimum effort. It is the precise and well-timed release of force. The sources of Riki are breathing control, correct posture, mental focus, and initiation from the core (Tanden).

Matsumura Rohai (松村鷺牌)

Matsumura Rohai is an old kata created by Matsumura Sokon, the chief martial arts instructor to the Ryukyu Kingdom in the 19th century. Preserved in Shito-ryu and certain Shorin-ryu lineages, it reflects the influence of Tomari-te techniques within the Shuri-te tradition. The name Rohai is often interpreted as “vision of a heron,” referring to the kata’s signature one-leg stances and upright posture, which demand exceptional balance, precision, and timing.

Distinct from the Tomari master Matsumora Kosaku’s version, Matsumura Rohai is characterized by its measured rhythm, subtle changes in direction, and defensive counterattacks. The kata emphasizes stability in single-leg postures and sharp control in arm techniques.
