White Crane Fist, or Hakutsuru Ken, as taught by Master Wu Xian Hui (known in Okinawa as Go Kenki), is a traditional martial arts style rooted in White Crane Kung Fu from China. His teachings helped preserve the rich tradition of White Crane Fist within the broader scope of Okinawan karate. Hakutsuru Ken emphasizes graceful yet powerful movements that mimic the crane’s defensive and offensive techniques. The style focuses on fluidity, precision, and control, combining evasive footwork with open-hand strikes, deflections, and quick counters. Practitioners develop heightened sensitivity, using subtle body mechanics and angles to neutralize attacks, with an emphasis on soft but effective power. Master Go Kenki refined and passed down these techniques, blending them into Okinawan karate traditions.
Master Kenwa Mabuni learned three katas—Papuren, Nipaipo, and Haffa—from Master Go Kenki, modifying and simplifying them for inclusion in his Shitoryu Karatedo syllabus

Kenwa Mabuni (摩文仁 賢和, Mabuni Kenwa, 14 November 1889 - 23 May 1952) was one of the first karateka to teach karate in mainland Japan and is credited as developing the style known as Shitō-ryū. Mabuni chose Shito-ryu, the first characters of the names Itosu and Higaonna, his two primary teachers of Shuri-Te and Naha-Te.

Chatan Yara Kushanku (北谷 屋良 ) Kata

kata Kushanku version of master Yara from Chatan village of Okinawa.

Master Yara was born in Okinawa, in the village of Chatan. He traveled together with his uncle in Fuzhou in Fukien province (China), where allegedly he stayed 20 years. There he studied Chinese Chuan Fa, Qi Gong, fighting with sticks. Upon his return to Okinawa he worked as an interpreter.

Manzo Iwata – A Master of Precision, Tradition, and Budō Philosophy

February 9, 1924 – June 4, 1993

Master Manzo Iwata was born on February 9, 1924, in Takinogawa, Kita-ku, Tokyo, as the second son of the Iwata family, proprietors of the “Iwataen” tea wholesale store. From an early age, Iwata was drawn to martial arts, beginning his training in Judo, Kendo, and Aikido around 1930. However, it was in the early 1940s that his interest in Karatedō began to blossom.
In 1941, Iwata enrolled at Toyo University, where he joined the university’s Karate Club. There, he had the pivotal experience of encountering Sensei Kenwa Mabuni, the founder of Shitō-ryū Karatedō. During this period, he also studied the traditional Jojutsu (staff techniques) of the Daien-ryū (大円流) Jojutsu lineage under Sensei Seiko Fujita, the 14th-generation master of Kōga-ryū Ninjutsu—the famed ninja tradition of feudal Japan....
