温故知新 Literally meaning "learning from the past to gain new insights," it suggests that by studying and understanding the wisdom of the past, one can develop fresh perspectives and ideas for the present and future. In other words, "reviewing the old to understand the new." This encourages learning from past knowledge to gain new insights and wisdom. In karate and other disciplines, this concept underscores the idea that tradition and experience can guide and improve current practices.

Nintai (忍耐) "perseverance" or "patience." In karate, it refers to the ability to endure challenges and difficulties, whether in training, competitions, or personal growth. Nintai emphasizes mental strength, resilience, and the commitment to push through obstacles to achieve one’s goals.

Courteous (Teinei 丁寧) Courtesy fosters harmony in the dojo and in life. Being polite, treating others kindly, and creating a positive training environment are all part of developing strong relationships and mutual respect in karate practice.

In a karate dojo context, Teinei can be practiced in small but impactful ways, such as bowing with sincerity, treating equipment respectfully, and listening attentively to instructions. The concept of Teinei encourages karateka to approach training and interactions with awareness, care, and respect for the martial arts tradition and their fellow practitioners.

By cultivating Teinei alongside Reigi (formal etiquette), Karatekas not only improve their discipline but also their ability to connect respectfully with others in all areas of life.

Self-Control (Seigyo 制御)
Karate isn’t just about mastering techniques; it’s about learning to control both body and mind. For a karateka, this means developing the ability to stay calm, manage emotions, and make thoughtful choices, whether in the dojo or in daily life. Practicing self-control helps create a sense of balance and harmony, allowing them to respond with strength and respect in any situation.

制御 (Seigyo) implies the idea of managing or restraining oneself, often in the sense of controlling emotions, actions, or responses. In karate, Seigyo encourages practitioners to have command over their impulses and reactions, fostering a balanced and thoughtful approach in both training and life.

Humility (Kenkyo 謙虚)
Staying humble allows a karateka to continuously improve. In karate, there's always more to learn, regardless of rank or experience, and humility keeps one grounded and open to correction and growth.
謙虚 (kenkyo) reflects a sense of modesty, self-awareness, and respect for others, qualities highly valued in Japanese culture and Budo, where humility is seen as a key trait for growth and learning.

Courage (Yūki 勇気),
In karate, 勇気 (Yūki), or courage, is a guiding quality that shapes practitioners both physically and mentally. Courage in karate is about more than just bravery in facing an opponent; it also involves the internal strength to confront personal fears, limitations, and insecurities. This value connects deeply with 武士道 (Bushidō), the way of the warrior, where courage is one of the core virtues. Practicing Yūki means embracing challenges, persisting through difficult training, and developing the resilience to overcome setbacks. True courage includes the willingness to look inward, acknowledge areas for growth, and remain committed to self-improvement.

Integrity (Seigi 正義)

Seigi is commonly translated as "justice" or "righteousness." Practicing karate with honesty and strong moral principles ensures that you stay true to the spirit of the art. In karate, Seigi means acting with justice and doing what’s right. It’s more than just following rules—it’s about being honest, fair, and true to karate’s values, both in the dojo and in daily life. Practicing with integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.
In Japanese philosophy, Seigi represents doing what is ethically correct and right. This includes acting with honesty and upholding principles, closely aligning with the concept of integrity. Seigi embodies the kind of ethical steadfastness that defines integrity, especially in the context of karate practice.

Loyalty (Chūgi 忠義)

In karate, Chūgi or loyalty goes beyond just being committed; it’s about having a deep respect for your dojo, your sensei, your fellow students, and the art itself. It means honoring the values and traditions that have been passed down through the years and sticking to the principles of karate even when things get tough. Chūgi is about showing appreciation for your sensei by practicing earnestly, contributing positively to your dojo’s atmosphere, and fostering strong friendships with your peers to build a supportive and respectful community. For a karateka, loyalty is a heartfelt commitment to your karate journey, where you not only grow in skill but also help those around you develop as well. This dedication not only shapes your character but also helps preserve the spirit of karate for those who come after you.

Dedication, Devotion (shōjin 精進)
Part - 1
Shōjin (精進) in karate is all about the heart and dedication that a practitioner brings to their journey. It’s not just about showing up for training; it’s a deep commitment to improving oneself, both physically and mentally. When a karateka embraces shōjin, they are motivated to push through challenges, learn from mistakes, and grow with every practice. This dedication helps build resilience and a positive attitude, turning obstacles into opportunities for learning. Moreover, shōjin fosters a sense of respect and humility, reminding us that we are part of a larger community of martial artists. By dedicating ourselves to this path, we not only refine our techniques but also cultivate a strong character, making karate not just a sport, but a way of life that enriches our personal growth and relationships with others.

Dedication, Devotion (shōjin 精進)

Part - 2

In karate, shōjin (Dedication, Devotion) aligns closely with the path of Dō (道, "the way") —seeing karate not only as a set of techniques but as a way of life that shapes character and enriches the spirit through ongoing, purposeful dedication. This principle inspires practitioners to pursue karate with a heart that is sincere, focused, and relentless in its dedication.

State of Readiness (Yoi 用意)

In karate, Yoi (用意) is all about being ready—physically, mentally, and emotionally. It’s the posture and mindset a practitioner takes before beginning a technique or training, showing alertness, calm focus, and preparation. Yoi goes beyond just physical readiness; it means clearing the mind, centering yourself, and being open to respond instantly and effectively to whatever comes. This readiness is something you build over time through focused practice and mindfulness, helping you stay fully present.

Yoi reminds us of the importance of being prepared, balanced, and aware, not only in karate but in everyday life.

Master Kenwa Mabuni’s poem, “Forget mundane things when striving for the martial isle... paddling is joy,” captures the essence of the martial arts journey. When Master Mabuni mentions “joy in paddling,” he’s highlighting a unique kind of fulfillment—the deep satisfaction that comes from dedicating oneself to consistent, focused practice.

In his metaphor, “paddling” represents the constant, sometimes challenging effort needed to progress in martial arts. The “martial isle” symbolizes the ultimate goal or mastery. But the joy he speaks of isn’t a surface-level happiness; it’s a steady sense of purpose and reward that grows from wholeheartedly engaging in the journey itself. For Mabuni, fulfillment lies not only in reaching the destination but in each step of the path—the rhythm of training, the growth, and even the struggles along the way.

Mabuni’s words encourage martial artists to let go of daily distractions and immerse themselves in the journey of improvement. He reminds us that the real reward is in the process: every repetition, every practice session, and every personal challenge enriches the mind, body, and spirit.

Etiquette and Respect (Rei 礼)

One of the most important parts of martial arts is showing respect, especially through bowing. Bowing whether when you enter the dojo, greet your Sensei, or meet other practitioners is a way to show courtesy and humility. Always bow to your Sensei!

The word "Rei" (礼) comes from “Reigi”, meaning respect, courtesy, and manners in Japanese. Rei isn’t just about the physical act of bowing; it’s reflected in how we treat others, with humility, gratitude, and genuine consideration. This respect is a core part of the karate mindset and a foundation for learning and personal growth.
