Training with overloads, such as resistance bands, weights, and other forms of external resistance, offers numerous benefits for improving physical fitness, strength, and speed. One of the key advantages is the progressive resistance it provides, which is essential for increasing muscle strength and endurance. When muscles encounter increased resistance, they adapt by becoming stronger and more resilient. This adaptation process, known as hypertrophy, leads to greater muscle mass and enhanced muscular endurance, which can significantly improve performance in various physical activities, including karate.

Shichitenhakki (七転八起)
The concept of Shichitenhakki is a Japanese proverb that translates to “fall seven times, stand up eight.” It represents resilience, perseverance, and the indomitable spirit that encourages individuals to keep moving forward despite repeated failures or setbacks.
In martial arts, particularly in Karate, Shichitenhakki embodies the mindset of continuing to train, learn, and grow even when faced with difficulties or challenges. It reflects the importance of persistence and determination in overcoming obstacles, whether they are physical, mental, or technical. Practitioners are encouraged to never give up, to rise stronger after each fall, and to continuously seek improvement.
This proverb also extends beyond martial arts into everyday life, serving as a reminder that resilience is key to personal and spiritual development. The idea is not to focus on how many times you fail, but on your willingness and effort to rise and try again each time.

Shoshin (初心) refers to the attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions when learning something, even at an advanced level. Maintaining a Shoshin mindset allows practitioners to stay humble, curious, and open to continuous learning, acknowledging that there is always more to learn, and that complete mastery is an ever-distant goal.
The process of learning is a journey of discovery, not just of new techniques or katas, but also of the vastness of what we don't know. This realization is not a sign of inadequacy but a mark of true intellectual growth. It encourages curiosity, continuous learning, and an open-minded approach to the complexities in martial arts and life. By embracing this paradox, we remain lifelong learners, always striving to understand and learn more, while accepting that complete knowledge may always be just out of reach.

温故知新 Literally meaning "learning from the past to gain new insights," it suggests that by studying and understanding the wisdom of the past, one can develop fresh perspectives and ideas for the present and future. In other words, "reviewing the old to understand the new." This encourages learning from past knowledge to gain new insights and wisdom. In karate and other disciplines, this concept underscores the idea that tradition and experience can guide and improve current practices.
