The bar graph compares the percentage of cars owned by households in one particular European country from 1971 to 2001. Overall, the percentage of households owning one and two cars rose to varying degrees, while those with no cars showed a considerable decrease over the period. Initially, more people had no car, however, having one became popular in the second half of the period.
In 1971, 50% of households had no car, followed by those with one car and two cars with about 35% and 18%, respectively. Over the next decade, the figures for no car and one car declined slightly to 40% and 31% each, while households with two cars increased to roughly 25%.
From 1991, the proportions of people having no car continued a consistent decline and leveled off at 30% in 2001. In contrast, the trends for one and two cars then diverged, with the former increasing to nearly 50% before falling to 42% in the final year and the latter decreasing to 20%. By 2001, the percentage of households with two cars had increased to approximately 30%.
