Announcing Surface Duo Drivers version 2312.29

What's new?

- New!: You can now install drivers offline more easily, simply run "OfflineUpdater.cmd" at the root of the zip archive you downloaded, and follow instructions
- New!: You can now install drivers online! In other words, you can update the drivers on the device itself, while the OS is running. Currently this is work in progress and only supported if you have secure boot off (which normally is not the case). To update your drivers online within the os, simply run "OnlineUpdater.cmd" at the root of the zip archive you downloaded, and follow instructions
- New!: We added better application installation support
- New!: We now provide the matching version of driver updater so you can install the release more easily

- Surface Duo (1st Gen)

What's new?

- New!: We updated the audio calibration board configuration files. For now, you will notice audio is not yet enabled due to SPKR issues, we hope to bring this in next week for the anniversary release
- New!: We updated the fingerprint sensor driver. The driver is now 100% functional with Secure Boot disabled. We will try to find a way out of this caveat for the next release.
- New!: We improved the installation process to be faster and not depend on extra install steps online. This should result in less errors and more reliability.
- New!: We updated most Qualcomm Drivers to their latest version (v2040)
- New!: We added support for additional Surface Docking Accessories (Surface Audio Dock) by default
- New!: We updated all Surface Drivers to their latest version when applicable
- New!: We introduced a prerelease driver for Surface Dial support. Support remains disabled in this release.
- New!: We introduced touch support for Redstone 5 and earlier Windows Versions.
New!: We are now providing smaller download packages, specifically tailored towards a given device and OS target.

As part of this update, you will also notice the device gets correctly advertised as a phone to other Bluetooth devices as well
For easy offline update,

- download the zip for your device, plug your device in mass storage mode (via twrp),
- launch offlineupdater.cmd (no need to run as admin, just double click)
- enter the drive letter appearing in file explorer for the windows partition of the device into the corresponding prompt,
- and press enter, and that's all you need to do.
For people wanting to try online update:

Make sure you're using an uefi with secureboot disabled from the start (will not detail how to switch from SB on to SB off state (it's not as simple as booting the sb off uefi or windows will fail to boot)

Download the latest driver release zip on the device itself
Extract it
Double tap the onlineupdate.cmd file
let it do its thing
reboot device
Announcing Surface Duo UEFI version 2312.29

What's new?

- General Updates

- We now provide secureboot disabled variants among other things, here's a small primer:

Fast Boot -> Use with fastboot boot uefi.img (equivalent to old normal option)‍
Dual Boot -> Self explanatory, matches the older dual boot option‍
FD -> File needed to make dual boot images on your own like before

- Enables support for the latest Driver Set version

Small issue some people already noticed, but the driverupdater.exe file in the zip archives is meant for ARM64 Windows, if you try to offline update and use a PC using another architecture (ie, amd64 or i386), you will want to replace driverupdater with the latest version for your architecture

you also want to use the latest driverupdater by all means, older versions aren't compatible anymore, and newer versions aren't compatible with older driver releases.

We will address the small architecture issue tomorrow but not today in the zip files

Update: we fixed the issue, new refreshed zip packages got provided with the only change being the fixed driverupdater binaries, there's no need to reupdate the device if you already did so

Announcing DuoWOA Second Anniversary

2 years on the 16 December 2021, I received my first Surface Duo (1st gen).

In reality, the entire idea to do what became DuoWOA today came from months prior, if not when the device got launched, but due to a very high price and availability issues at the time I never got any at launch.
In reality as well, I got help from a few friends before I got that very first device, willing to test for me. While I had ordered the device already, there was one month of shipping delay, and wanted to start earlier.

For 2 months since December to February, there were many times where I wondered if this would even work, due to displays issues. I wish I could not say this but there's been a few times when I thought of giving up. Ultimately we got it to work. But little did I think where this would have went.

I do not think back then I realized how far this would have went, "I'll get a Surface Duo now to change my mind from Lumia 950s, where I've been hitting a dead end for quite a while" I told myself. But there never was any more thoughts into it.

In the end, we managed to get almost everything working on this device today with Windows, to a state that even I, was not thinking would have been possible before. I've met so many people as well while doing so, more than with LumiaWOA. It's hard to think that even for such a niche device, a lot of people were willing to follow along, or even jump on board.

In reality, most of the work that was done so far is thanks to more than one person, not just me. But ultimately, it's also thanks to everyone else but me. I had a lot of fun working on this, and still am today, but I don't think we would be where we are without the motivation of every single one of you present for the ride.

DuoWOA is here to stay, and I owe a lot to a lot of people as well, but I wanted to thank everyone as part of today for being around, following the project, trying things, sometimes breaking things (and me being a bit scared/anxious of the bug reports, but please keep them coming they help a lot even if i don't really say otherwise :) )

I'm very much of a shy person from the start, community interactions aren't my cup of tea, but i'm very happy with where we ended after 2 years, and it's mostly thank to all of you, and me still enjoying doing it.

There's a lot more to come for next year, honestly this year has been rather slow in my opinion, there's been various reasons for it. But I very much hope the next year brings more changes quicker with less gaps.

Oh, while we're talking right now: To celebrate today's anniversary, there's a little something (20GB worth of files :D) going to be released at around 9:10 UTC+1. And we'll try to keep this updated from now, all the time, we update drivers and firmware. :)

Thank you so much for being part of this! <3 And have a good holiday season <3 <3 <3
