There’s been a lot of conversation today over the “military draft” topic. We did some research and talked to some military folks in the know to gain a perspective on this, and wanted to share.
Each summer, Congress votes on The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which sets the priorities and budget for the Pentagon, US Military and the Department of Energy. This year’s requested budget is $895 billion, a $9 billion increase from last year.
The NDAA starts in the Armed Services Committee then goes to the full Congress. The House of Representatives voted on it last Friday and the Senate is deliberating now. The NDAA typically goes through double-digit iterations before both Congressional bodies approve it.
The main focus for this year’s NDAA is improving the quality of life for service members. It calls for significant pay increases for military personnel, building of new military housing and renovation of existing housing.

There’s lots of talk about the selective service provision. First, the US has not reinstated the draft…yet. We haven’t had a draft since 1973. There are some changes to Selective Service.
The nation’s Selective Service System is a federal agency that already requires men 18-26 to register. Failure to do so is a possible felony charge of up to five years in prison and a fine up to $250K.
For men, the change is automatic enrollment rather than registration. The agency says it already has a list of eligible men, so why not just automatically enroll them? It saves money.
For women, the NDAA currently has women now, for the first time, being required to register (just as men have done in the past.) The House did pass this last week. This is bad news for men claiming to be women, who have thus far been able to circumvent registration. Interestingly the NDAA only addresses men and women, not the oodles of other genders that people are professing to be. In the NDAA, DEI measures are blocked, too. Sorry, Lloyd Austin. It seems the DoD might have tried their best to create a loophole for other genders.
Enlisting in the service is still voluntary but these new measures would make it easier to implement a draft should the US enter a war. Understandably, none of us want to send our kids to fight the Deep State’s Ukraine War or any other for that matter. There are several petitions going around the internet, so certainly do your civic duty to protest this measure if that is how you see it.
The new rules may have drivers: (1) the military is now at its smallest active duty levels since 1940. (2) Pew Research Center indicates only about 1 in 4 young people qualify for the military and many age 18-29 have a negative view of the armed forces.
