"Everything was driving toward the political view of the professor that was teaching the course, whereas, I’m thinking about an intellectual history class I took, I didn’t really know what my professor thought."

I asked Bari, "What is it supposed to be about at its best as far as you’re concerned? What did it do for you?" (Columbia University).
"Teaching me how to think, think critically, read a text, and at the deepest moments, have it transform me rather than what I encountered, for example, in the Middle East Studies Department, which was more like hearing a preacher. It was more just propaganda."

Doing things for other people is more rewarding than anything else you can do.
We don’t just play one game with other people. We play a repeating game. You want to be the person that everyone wants to play alongside. How do you become that person? Be productive, straightforward, and generous.
You can make the claim that being selfish works. Well, we are a community of selves stretched across time. Instead of being selfish and only seeking what is best for the present “you”, act in an enlightened manner that would benefit that entire community of “you” across time. The idea is to continually be picked by other people to keep playing the subset of games that life consists of.
If you are chosen last, then something is wrong.

"4chan is emblematic of a broader section of the internet, which was driven by irreverency, was driven by this idea of that which is presented to us with earnestness should not be taken at face value, that this earnestness is often used as a cudgel and as a mechanism of effecting a social control."

Those who do not choose a direction are lost. It is far better to become something than to remain anything but become nothing.
This is despite all the genuine limitations and disappointments that becoming something entails. Everywhere, the cynic despairs, are bad decisions. But someone who has transcended that cynicism (or more accurately, replaced it with an even more profound doubt— that is, the doubt that doubt itself is an ultimately reliable guide) objects: the worst decision of all is none.

"When I’ve gone to the TV stations and been interviewed by a journalist, I’ll have a discussion with the journalist in the green room, and I’m talking to a person then. But as soon as the cameras go on, I’m not talking to a person anymore. I’m talking to someone who’s an adept mouthpiece for a massive corporate organization."
