Another clarification I wanted to mention, is that when you go to change your status, you do not use the renewal passport application, you use a brand new one. Copper moonshine stills explains this in detail and walks you through it. You are not renewing the old passport.

If you are going in person and they ask you why are using a new passport application, you reply that you are changing your status. They know what it means
