It was a tough call in which it took us around 5+ hours to choose

One of the biggest stories in Ethiopia’s tech scene last year was the rise of Better Auth, a developer tool built by a self-taught programmer that went on to secure a place in Y Combinator and raise millions of dollars. It’s a story of grit, innovation, and global recognition.

But beneath the celebration lies a paradox: while the product was created in Ethiopia, the company is incorporated abroad, meaning much of the value it generates won’t return home.

Africa is producing world-class innovators, but the question remains: who truly benefits when the brightest ideas are forced to seek growth outside their own ecosystems?
