Gravata, Pernambuco, Brazil

In the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, heavy rains began on the evening of Monday, March 2, leading to flooding in the city of Gravata (Agreste region).
Up to 80 mm of rain fell there over the past 24 hours, including 76 mm in just over an hour at the peak of the storm. The torrential rains flooded streets and homes, causing water to enter buildings, and cars to stall in the floodwaters.
The areas near canals and the Ipojuca River, particularly the São José neighborhood, were hit the hardest. According to the municipality, there are no casualties, but some residents have temporarily fled their homes.
According to the Agência Pernambucana de Águas e Clima (Apac), a state of heightened alert has been issued for the region. Forecasters warn that moderate to heavy rainfall will continue in Agreste and the interior of the state in the coming days.
