PEARL HARBOR WAS AN INSIDE JOB

There was a German spy arrested for his role in Pearl Harbor, his name was Bernard Julius Otto Kuehn, a Nazi party member who moved to Hawaii in 1935 and worked with Japanese intelligence to provide critical ship positioning information using coded signals (like sheets on a clothesline) to Japanese submarines, leading to his conviction and a long prison sentence, though he was later released early by President Roosevelt after the war.

Bernard was a German national and Nazi Party member who became a key spy for Japan in Hawaii before the attack.

He moved his family to Hawaii, where he established a complex signaling system with the Japanese consulate to report on U.S. fleet movements.

Bernard provided specific details about the U.S. fleet's location and status to the Japanese consulate in November 1941, just days before the attack.

He used signals like a light in a dormer window (meaning carriers were gone) or a sheet on a clothesline (meaning the fleet had left to communicate with Japanese.)

Bernard was tried by a military tribunal, convicted, and initially sentenced to death, but President Roosevelt changed that. Roosevelt changed his sentence to 50 years in prison.

Bernard ended up only serving 4 years in Fort Leavenworth prison before being released by President Roosevelt and head of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, after the war. Bernard Julius Otto Kuehn, a Nazi party member returned to Germany.
