At the ET World Leaders Forum, EAM S Jaishankar, when asked about the Saudi-Pakistan MECCA defence pact,

He said when you call something a defence pact, you have to look at whether the signatories had live military situations and whether anyone came to their aid, and "not everybody has come to everybody's aid." So the report of the pact doing nothing in a real crisis is the answer, comparisons are not fair/relevant, and while India notes any defence/tech cooperation between unfriendly players, he won't publicly bare his strategic calculus.

politics suffers from amnesia and criticism that India has "lost" its neighbourhood is a political fantasy. Citing a recent poll where 79% Sri Lankans viewed India favourably despite the difficult IPKF period, he said problems existed even before - Indian company expelled in Maldives, anti-India terrorists sheltered in Dhaka, anti-India politics in Nepal during and after the monarchy. Such ups and downs are natural for a big country with smaller neighbours, and the best fix is deeper economic cooperation and mutual dependence that stabilises ties, though it won't solve everything.
