India is making a significant shift in the way it manages its foreign exchange reserves. Over the past 18 months, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reduced its holdings of US Treasury securities by nearly $60 billion, bringing them down from around $241 billion in October 2024 to approximately $181 billion in April 2026. This marks the country's lowest level of US Treasury holdings in nearly six years.

At the same time, India has aggressively expanded its gold reserves, which are now valued at nearly $115 billion. Gold's share in the country's foreign exchange reserves has also risen steadily, reflecting the RBI's growing preference for the precious.
