Government slashes excise duty on petrol to Rs 3 per litre from Rs 13, and cut excise duty on diesel to zero from Rs 10 per litre.

But this won’t translate into cheaper fuel for consumers. Instead, the relief is being directed at #Oil marketing companies reeling under losses from high global crude prices. By easing their tax burden, the Centre is effectively cushioning OMCs and reducing the pressure to hike retail prices.
