🚨🇺🇸💀 US secret atomic experiments: Citizens as lab rats

Between 1944 and 1974, the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), Department of Defense, and NIH conducted over 4,000 secret radiation experiments on American citizens.

More than 16,000 people were affected, often without their knowledge or consent.

Deadly experiments took place in hospitals, schools, prisons, and military bases across Rochester, New York, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Chicago, Illinois, and San Francisco, California.

Ordinary civilians were treated as living data.

🤢 Plutonium poisoned patients

▪️In one of the most notorious programmes, 18 patients, mostly terminally ill, were injected with plutonium or uranium to track how radioactive substances moved through the body.

▪️One of the subjects was a four-year-old boy. Limbs were sometimes amputated after death to study radioactive retention in bone.

▪️Albert Stevens, a California house painter, lived 20 years with plutonium in his body, only for his bones to be shipped to a government laboratory without his family’s knowledge.

🤰Pregnant women, newborns & children

▪️More than 700 pregnant women were given radioactive iron under the guise of prenatal vitamins, while newborns were fed radioactive iodine to monitor fetal and infant exposure. The women and families were unaware of the dangers, and long-term effects remain uncertain.

▪️In Massachusetts, children with developmental disabilities were fed cereal laced with radioactive calcium and iron tracers.

▪️They were told they were joining a ‘science club’, and parents were deceived. Researchers tracked bone growth, metabolism, and radiation retention — all without consent, leaving lasting consequences for the children.

🪖 Soldiers in fallout zone

▪️US soldiers were ordered to march towards ground zero during Operation Desert Rock and nuclear tests in the Pacific.

▪️They were told the tests were safe.Thousands later developed radiation-linked cancers, thyroid disorders, and chronic illnesses as a direct result of their exposure.

👮 Prisoners & poor

▪️Eighty-eight mostly African-American cancer patients received full-body irradiation.

▪️Prisoners were offered reduced sentences or small payments to participate in ‘voluntary’ radiation trials — without being fully informed of the risks.

👏 Secrecy & cover-ups

▪️Plutonium victims were recorded under codes such as HP1–HP18. Thousands of files documenting over 4,000 experiments on 16,000 subjects remained classified for decades.

➡️ In 1986, Congressman Edward J. Markey had conducted hearings on "America's Nuclear Guinea Pigs," but those hearings were largely ignored.

➡️ In 1993, journalist Eileen Welsome, revealed the victims, publishing her investigations and exposing the US gov’t abuses to the public.

➡️ In 1995, President Clinton publicly admitted, “What the United States government did was wrong.” Compensation and ethics reforms followed, but most victims already were dead, and justice arrived too late.
