Govt Plans HAL Restructuring to Boost Deliveries, Efficiency

The Centre has brought in an external consultancy to chart out reforms at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), aiming to speed up deliveries and improve efficiency. With an order book worth nearly ₹2.7 lakh crore—over eight times its annual revenue—HAL is struggling to balance massive production commitments while competing for fresh projects like the AMCA.

Officials are examining a proposal to split HAL into specialized entities focusing separately on fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and maintenance/repair operations. A similar idea was floated earlier but shelved due to limited orders at the time. The current scale of HAL’s backlog, covering fighter jets, utility and combat helicopters, and propulsion systems, may now push the government to revisit restructuring on priority.
