On the left, Pakistan’s forests destroyed by the Timber Mafia under the watch of our Pakistani governments. This isn’t just a satellite image, it’s a reflection of our broken system"

India now spends ₹2 trillion/year (0.6% of GDP) on cash transfers to 130M+ women under Ladli Behen Yojana—yet we know little about their effects. This paper presents findings from the first large-scale RCT of maternal cash transfers in India. Here is the synopsis.

> ₹500/month transfers led to a 9–15% jump in calorie intake for mothers and children, with better diet diversity and more protein/iron.

>Mothers’ calorie intake rose faster than others’, reducing intra-household food inequality and hinting at growing maternal empowerment.

>Kids in treated households showed significant improvements in cognitive and motor skills (0.12 SD at age 3), even if height/weight didn’t change much.

>Nutrition gains translated into physical growth only in areas with better sanitation, linking India’s malnutrition crisis to open defecation.

>Cash vs Food Transfers: Families spent ~40% of transfers on food, yielding calorie gains similar to India’s PDS rations. Suggests cash works as well as in-kind.
