Antarctica has gained ice mass for the first time in decades, reversing a long-term trend of lossing ice and temporarily offsetting sea-level rise. Between 2021 and 2023, the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) gained approximately 108 gigatons of ice per year, a significant turnaround from the previous decade where it was losing ice at a rate of 142 gigatons per year. This mass gain was particularly notable in four East Antarctic glacier basins that had previously been losing ice.
