British Army Has More Horses Than Tanks

The UK's reserves include 213 tanks (only half of which are operational) and 497 horses.

Additionally, the British Navy has more Admirals than shipsโ€”40 individuals hold the rank of Admiral, while the fleet consists of 25 ships, fewer than half of which are in working condition.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that Britain is ready to send troops to Ukraine to provide security guarantees.

Indian Steel Output Touches 150 Million Tonnes / Year

With the January 2025 data from https://worldsteel.org/media/press-releases/2025/january-2025-crude-steel-production/ , it is official - India hit 150MT of steel output for a 12 month period (Feb 2024 - Jan 2025).

Jan-Dec 2024 was just under this mark, at 149.60MT, but the first month of 2025 saw this milestone officially.

Why is this important?

India is the only third country ever to hit this milestone. Of these only two of them still remain. Listed by country and year achieved:

USSR : 1988
China : 2001
India : 2025

What about the US ? Japan ? Germany ? UK ? Not even during the peak of the world wars and post war boom years ?

Short answer - No. The US maximum was 139MT in 1973 at the peak of the steel boom. Japan peaked at 125MT a year later. Here are some industrialized countries and their peak years:

India wasn't always a major steel producer. In fact it only produced 25MT at the turn of the century. It now produces 6X that figure 25 years later.

The historical graph also shows that the 2020s demonstrate the most significant semi-decadal acceleration in steel output, as seen from the slope of the graph.

India has only a third of US and Chinese land area. There's a more limited amount space to build stuff in.

Within those constraints, it is by a distance the second largest producer of several major core items from steel to cement to aluminium.

Unlike China, a major part of whose core sector output feeds an export engine and is therefore essentially 'offshored' steel production, India is not such a major manufactured goods exporter.

Rather, the growth in steel output - especially the dramatic rise in the 2020s - is a proxy for the intensity of the infrastructure and manufacturing growth that is currently happening.

With a likely 160MT this year, India looks set to cross 200MT in steel output before the end of the decade.
