Mazagon Dockyard Limited has submitted the bids the construction of submarines as part of the "Make in India" initiative, sources claim. The submarines construction project is aimed at bolstering Indian naval operations in the Indo-Pacific.

These three new submarines will complement the six submarines ordered in 2005. The original contract was for the purchase of six submarines to be built by MDL through technology transfer.

📅 The first of the new submarine series, INS Kalvari, has entered service in December 2017 with the fifth, INS Vagir, having joined the fleet in January 2023. The sixth submarine, Vagsheer, is currently undergoing trials and is expected to be delivered to the Navy in early 2024.

📍 Notably, these three submarines are expected to have higher indigenous content and will be equipped with the DRDO-developed Air Independent Propulsion system, enhancing their capabilities.
