Russia Sheds ‘Unfriendly’ Currency Dependency, Doubles Chinese Yuan Share Cap

Russia’s finance ministry confirmed Friday that it had doubled the maximum possible share of Chinese yuan in its national Wealth Fund to 60%, while cutting GBP and Japanese yen to zero.

Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said the trend to move away from relying on currencies from countries that back sanctions against Russia will continue, but added that Moscow has always replenished the NWF with foreign currency “to hedge exchange rate risks” anyway.

The Moscow Exchange expects yuan-ruble trade to surpass dollar-ruble trade next year.

Mahesh Vyas, managing director of the CMIE, said the rise in the unemployment rate was "not as bad as it may seem," as it came on top of a healthy increase in the labour participation rate, which shot up to 40.48 percent in December, the highest in 12 months.
