Ace Mountaineer Colonel Prem Chand (retd), the first Indian to scale Kanchenjunga, the country’s highest peak, in 1977 through its toughest route, the North East Spur, has passed away after a brief illness. in Kullu, on Tuesday. He was 87.

He was also the only living person to have climbed both peaks of Nanda Devi, the main peak, and the east one, Sunanda Devi, regarded as one of the toughest Indian peaks to scale.

As principal of Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), he is credited with helping Bachendri Pal become the first Indian woman to scale Mt Everest in 1984. In 1983, he personally trained the all-women expedition group, led by Pal, which went on to scale Everest.

Bachendri Pal said she owes her career to her ‘guru’ Colonel Chand. “He inspired me to take up mountaineering and shaped my professional life too.”

He was also known as the 'Snow Tiger'.
