Medicines are a ₹2.9 lakh crores market in India. And the biggest sales persons in this market are the doctors. Don’t trust me. Watch this reel.
As per the medical council of India, doctors are advised to write the generic or salt name. But most doctors in India don’t follow this rule. And Pharma companies encourage doctors to push their brands of medicines.
The Government tried to ban such practices under a law in 2015. But due to pressure from the pharma group lobby, the government made it a voluntary ethical marketing code. It means the doctors and pharma companies are free to accept these rules, and there is no monitoring.
On the brighter side, the Government has launched the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadi Scheme to provide generic medicine at an affordable cost!
