Data Centers: Economic Opportunity or Environmental Risk?

Data centers are becoming one of the biggest infrastructure investments in America, especially with the rapid growth of AI.

On the financial side, they can bring billions in investment, construction jobs, tax revenue, infrastructure upgrades, and new business to local communities. But critics argue that generous tax incentives can reduce the public benefit, while increased demand for electricity can put upward pressure on utility costs.

On the environmental side, the concerns are just as serious. Large data centers can consume enormous amounts of electricity and, depending on their cooling systems and location, significant amounts of water. They can also increase pressure on power grids, land and local water supplies.

At the same time, better technology, renewable energy, more efficient cooling, and strong regulations could reduce many of these impacts. The real question may not be “data centers: good or bad?” but “who gets the benefits, and who pays the costs?”

Pastors who never learned the original language are not “interpreting.”
