Ukraine has begun firing U.S.-provided cluster munitions against Russian forces in southeastern Ukraine in a push to break up well-fortified Russian positions that have slowed Ukraine's summer offensive, according to Ukrainian officials familiar with the matter.

The Chinese side said that the parties will focus on working out issues of sea and air escort, deterrence, and organizing the defense of the anchorage area. A joint exercise involves imitation of actions close to combat. In general, this is a comprehensive test of the combat capabilities of the RF Armed Forces and the PLA for their joint operations in remote seas and areas.

Philippines closely monitors threat of invasion of Taiwan, defence chief says - Reuters

The threat of China invading Taiwan is something U.S. military ally the Philippines is monitoring on a daily basis as part of Manila's contingency plans for possible conflict in the region, its defence chief said on Thursday.

"We really have to make an assessment whether such is likely or not," Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro told reporters.

U.S. nuclear submarine visit to South Korea tantamount to meeting condition for North Korea nuclear nuke use: Pyongyang's defense chief - Yonhap

North Korea's defense chief warned Thursday a U.S. nuclear-capable strategic submarine's port visit to South Korea this week may fall under the legal conditions for his country's use of nuclear weapons.

Defense Minister Kang Sun-nam made the remarks, issuing an anticipated criticism of the visit here by the USS Kentucky, an 18,750-ton Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), and the recent inaugural meeting of the Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) between South Korea and the United States.
