Following the story by the New York Times on the U.S. Army AH-64 Apache that was downed near the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed both reports that it went down and the rescue of the two crew members, saying that the helicopter went down near the coast of Oman. Per the CENTCOM release, both soldiers were rescued within two hours of the helicopter going down and rescue efforts were led by U.S. Naval Forces CENTCOM and the 82nd Airborne Division. Additional naval and Air Force units provided support. Notably, no reason is provided for the helicopter’s downing, as per CENTCOM, “the cause of the incident is under investigation.”

According to Reuters, citing information from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), an unspecified U.S. Navy surface drone was responsible for locating the two U.S. soldiers after their AH-64 Apache helicopter went down near the Strait of Hormuz. While it’s not clear what specific system was utilized, the U.S. navy operates number of unmanned surface vessel squadrons, that are capable of a number of roles, including intelligence gathering and interdiction. U.S. Naval Forces Central Command’s (NAVCENT) Task Force 59, which CENTCOM said played a role in the rescue, has integrated such capabilities into the force.

Reporting now by CNN appears to confirm that the U.S. Army AH-64E Apache downed yesterday over the Strait of Hormuz was indeed struck by an Iranian Shahed-style one-way attack drone, though as the investigation into the incident continues, it is still not known if this was an accident or an intentional attack by Iran.

According to the New York Times, citing a number of diplomats and officials with knowledge of ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations, the U.S. and Iran have narrowed down the issue of Iran’s nuclear program to four main points. These points are a long-term suspension of Iranian uranium enrichment, the dilution or downblending of current enriched material, the dismantling of Iranian nuclear facilities, and Iran acceding to snap inspections to ensure compliance with whatever framework is agreed upon. Per the report, on the dilution of Iranian stockpiles, the U.S. plans to work directly with the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to realize such efforts. However, Iran has yet to be persuaded to allow direct U.S. involvement in such activities.
