We, the people of South Azerbaijan (the northwestern region of Iran), first congratulate you (the great man of the world) on your successes in creating global peace and supporting the oppressed. Then, we the people of South Azerbaijan have requests and expectations from you, which we have written below:
Mr. President, we the people of South Azerbaijan (of Turkic descent) in the northwestern regions of Iran have been under discrimination and oppression by the central government of Iran for about a century.

From the time when the Turkic-descended Qajar government in Iran was overthrown by a coup and Reza Khan Pahlavi, with British support, ascended to power, Reza Khan Pahlavi began policies of Turkophobia.
In this regard, he banned the “Azerbaijani Turkish” language in Iran! He ordered that anyone speaking Turkish in schools and government offices in South Azerbaijan be severely punished!
He turned the city of Tabriz (the center of South Azerbaijan), which had been the capital of five Turkic-descended empires in modern-day Iran and, during the Turkic Safavid Empire, one of the five most populous and largest cities in the world, into the most deprived region of Iran.

Through this method, he wanted the Turkish-speaking people of South Azerbaijan to migrate to Persian-speaking cities and, by associating with them, forget the Turkish language. With this method, he wanted to completely eradicate the Turkish language in Iran!

The former Pahlavi government (before the Islamic Republic of Iran and after the Qajars) oppressed the people of South Azerbaijan both ethnically and economically and socially. For this reason, in 1945, led by Ja’far Pishevari and with Soviet support, the people of South Azerbaijan separated from Iran and declared independence.

And once again, it began implementing anti-Turkish policies aimed at destroying the identity and ethnicity of the Turks of South Azerbaijan…

After the overthrow of the Pahlavi government by the people of Iran in 1979, the Islamic Republic of Iran (the government of Persian mullahs) came to power.

But after years passed, the Islamic Republic of Iran, like the Pahlavi government, began Persian nationalism and launched anti-Turkish policies!
We, the Turks of South Azerbaijan, even today under the Islamic Republic of Iran, are subjected to the most severe ethnic oppression and discrimination.
The South Azerbaijan region is one of the most deprived areas in Iran in terms of economy and social welfare.
Our Turkish language is banned in Iran.

Lake Urmia, one of the largest saltwater lakes in the world, was deliberately dried up by the Islamic Republic of Iran. By doing this, they want salt storms in spring and autumn to affect the South Azerbaijan region, forcing people from these areas to migrate to central Iran. Through this, they want to completely eliminate the Turkish language in Iran and neutralize the danger of South Azerbaijan’s separation from Iran.
We in South Azerbaijan have abundant mineral resources: copper, gold, titanium, oil, gas, and even uranium. All of these are extracted by the central government (Persians), and the revenues from their sales are spent and invested in Persian-speaking provinces, with no money given to the South Azerbaijan region itself!
Today in Iran, thousands of Turkish national civil activists from South Azerbaijan have been imprisoned by the Iranian regime!

Their crime is asking: Why have you banned our mother tongue? Why did you dry up Lake Urmia? Why do you insult us ethnically in your media? Why do you have a racist view toward us? Why do you colonize our mines and give us none of the revenues from them? In the cities of South Azerbaijan, especially in large cities such as Urmia, Tabriz, Ardabil, and Zanjan, all demand the independence of South Azerbaijan and freedom from the oppression and discrimination of the central Persian government in Iran.

Our purpose in appealing to you is for you to hear our voice. We beg you to support us, just as you are the voice of the oppressed around the world—be our voice too.
We do not want to be part of Iran (the Persians); they are enemies to us. We want to form our own national government.
The Turkish people of South Azerbaijan, with a population of about 30 million, are mostly nationalists and pro-American. Most of our people do not hold Islamist beliefs; they are secular and nationalist.

We, the people of South Azerbaijan, promise to you, the people and esteemed officials of the United States of America, that with your support for our independence from Iran, on the day of our independence, we will be the first-degree ally of the United States of America in the Middle East region.
