NIA unearthed a Syria-based online entity namely 'Ummimmarah' to which funds were transferred using cryptocurrency.

In a first of its kind probe, the federal agency has revealed in its charge sheet that accused Mohammad Mohsin Ahmad, a first-year engineering student, operated a crypto account with bitcoin exchange, Wazir X, and raised funds from as many as 20 entities in less than two years.

Ahmad, a native of Patna, was arrested by the NIA in August last year from south east Delhi Batla House and during the searches, a laptop containing ISIS propaganda material was found. The digital forensic evidence led to the seizure of literature including photoshopped images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ISIS pamphlets and photographs of al-Qaeda leaders Osama Bin Laden and Ayman Al-Jawahari, both killed in US airstrikes.

Investigations revealed that Ahmad conspired with ISIS handlers and others for the propagation of ISIS ideology, with the objective of radicalising Indian youth and recruiting them for ISIS. "He was involved in raising funds for ISIS from ISIS sympathisers and sending the collected funds to his Syria based ISIS handlers through crypto-currency channels, thereby supporting the ISIS in furtherance of its terrorist activities," the NIA stated.
