It was the medalists from the U.S. NATIONAL Championship, (that was held in Colorado Springs at the end of January, 1961) that were on that fateful flight to the WORLD Figure Skating Championship in Prague (Feb 15, 1961).

The U.S.National Figure Skating Championship was the first time that the skating competition was televised to a National audience on television.

Remember…there weren’t just athletes on the airplane, there were coaches and JUDGES!!!

The U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund was set up…to honor the athletes, coaches, and JUDGES who perished in the crash.

Guess what their “marketing phrase” was?
