On April 3rd and 4th, 1968,
Martin Luther King…and other members of the
Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) were in Memphis, Tennessee to support a local sanitation workers’ strike.

This was a lead-up to the big march King planned on leading in Washington DC.
They anticipated as many as 1 million marchers for this upcoming event calked The “Poor People’s Campaign.” Marchers were planning on coming to Washington DC on May 2nd.

Prior to the big March in DC, MLK agreed to come to Memphis…to support the 1,300 Black city sanitation workers who were striking. They were paid poorly, and were demanding a wage increase and better working conditions.

Prior to his assassination on
April 4, 1968 Martin Luther King had met with the Sanitation workers…who had been striking in Memphis for better working conditions.

By the way…

The “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech by
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr….was delivered the day before his assassination.

It was his last speech.

The speech was given at a MASONIC TEMPLE in Memphis.

Later in the evening,
Martin Luther King had been preparing to leave for a BBQ with Samuel Billy Kyles, a minister in Memphis, Tennessee.

King, and others spent about an hour in King’s hotel
room #306 at The Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, enjoying some “preacher talk.”

As the dinner hour neared, Kyles picked out a necktie for King and accompanied him onto the balcony of his hotel at around 5:45 p.m.

THIS TIE WOULD BECOME SIGNIFICANT!!
More on that later.

Martin Luther King was on the second floor balcony talking to people below him.

Then at 6:01pm, a shot
rang out from across the
Lorraine Hotel…and hit
Martin Luther King in the neck.

Even though he was mortally wounded, Martin Luther King didn’t die right away.

The men on the balcony with King attempted to make him comfortable…covering him with a blanket and placing his head on a pillow.

“Placing the blanket on MLK”will become significant when we roll out our other narrative.

The shooting was radioed to police headquarters just moments later.

There had also been several police officers stationed across the street from King’s hotel who witnessed the shooting and ran to the scene.
(Take note of this data point).

King was loaded into an ambulance at 6:09 p.m. and taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital.

“6” and “9”…THE NUMBERS.
