Vivian Liberto met
Johnny Cash at a roller skating rink in San Antonio, Texas.
She was 17 years old!!

The couple dated for 3 weeks before the Air Force deployed Johnny Cash to Germany.

Remember he was in Germany for 3 years. He was a Morse code intercept operator.

Johnny Cash and
Vivian Liberto were deeply in love.

They exchanged heartfelt love letters while Johnny served abroad.

Some of these beautiful love letters were published in Liberto’s 2007 memoir

Yes…you all knew about
June Carter Cash, but how many of you even knew about Vivian?

My Darling Viv. That was how Johnny Cash started his letters to Vivian.

Johnny Cash was very much in love with Vivian Liberto.

…and went on to have these
four daughters.

I really don’t think that these Cash daughters look like either parent…or each other for that matter.

If you go to the 37 minute mark and listen for a bit, Johnny Cash’s daughters talk about their Dad being a really sweet and wonderful father…as you would expect, given the beautiful way Johnny treated their mother, Vivian.

But then…
Johnny went on the road.
The drugs use started up (remember the amphetamines).

He visited infrequently.
And when he did come back…the daughters said he came back as a different Dad.

It’s like they didn’t even know him anymore.

Customs agents found
475 Equanil tablets and
688 Dexedrine capsules stashed in his guitar case and threw him in jail.
