In order to fake out the public (and the mob) about his death, Elvis had to have an “open casket.”
How did they pull this off?
A wax head from Madam Toussard…that Elvis had previously…was placed in his casket. They put side burns and hair on it to look real.
It was very hot in August, so
they put an air conditioner in the casket to keep the wax figure from melting.
The casket was so heavy due to the air conditioner that they needed 9 pall bearers to carry it!
Fans and security were ordered to stay away from the casket. This way they wouldn’t know.
Elvis went into hiding…but he wasn’t far…

Elvis’s original plan was to escape to Argentina. Instead he had to stake out in the pool house for a few months until it was safe to come out. He had all the security he needed because they were guarding the grave at Graceland.
The story goes that he read a lot and watched fans as they came to bid their respects.
