Operation Mockingbird was a C*I*A program that enlisted more than 400 American journalists, as well as journalists around the world, to manipulate public opinion by spreading propaganda or what we call it today…fake news.
Operation Mockingbird was a large-scale program within the C*I*A (aka Clowns) to manipulate news media for propaganda purposes. The program was thought to have started from the CIA’s forefather…the Office for Strategic Services (OSS). The OSS existed from 1942 to 1947.

Through the late 1960s and 1970s, several investigations looked into the Clown’s ties with the news media. Reporter Carl Bernstein wrote a cover story in “Rolling Stone” on October 20, 1977 about Operation Mockingbird.
Carl Bernstein worked for The Washington Post, and had also done much of the original reporting on the Watergate scandal.
After leaving The Washington Post in 1977, Bernstein spent six months looking into the relationship between the C*I*A and the press during the Cold War years…
Bernstein reported that by 1953, Operation Mockingbird was overseen by C*I*A Director Allen Dulles.
The C-I-A had major influence in over 25 U.S. newspapers and wire services. False news reports or propaganda would be provided by CIA writers to both knowing and unknowing reporters, who would then repeat the falsehoods over and over again.
Some journalists were threatened and blackmailed into cooperating with Mockingbird. Others were or became Pulitzer Prize winners.
