Heidi, back in 1960's when I lived around there, there were rumor's that the mafia, Carlos Marcello, was using 4th Marines as his kill squads out of the Naval Air Station in Belle Chasse, (a suburb right across the river from NO), at his beck and command. It was also rumored that Marcello was involved in the JFK assassination and that he received logistics and intel from that base, ("transient aircraft"). Locals at that time, knew that it had a shady history of being corrupted by the mafia. The NAS functions as a joint air reserve training center. It is an unusual base, in that it offers logistical and fiscal support for "transient aircraft?" 24/7, (perfect for trafficking). And also serves as a platform for "Homeland Security" air defense through the Air National Guard 159th wing. It also houses the US Coast Guard Air Station; Navy Intel; 4th Marines; and some Army functions. Caution: tread lightly around these issues.
