๐ต A dilemma over tribal land rights in Odisha - The Hindu
https://www.thehindu.com/opinion/op-ed/tribal-land-rights-in-odisha-osatip/article67562221.ece
As of the 2011 Census, the tribal population in the State stands at 95.91 lakh, comprising 22.85% of the total State population. Odisha is home to 62 distinct tribes, including 13 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups, showcasing one of the most diverse tribal landscapes in the country. It ranks as the third-largest concentration of tribal population, trailing behind Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Scheduled Tribes in Scheduled Areas constitute approximately 68.09% of the total tribal population. Notably, 121 out of the 314 blocks in Odisha have been designated as Scheduled Areas. Furthermore, about 44.70% of the Stateโs geographical expanse falls under the Scheduled Area classification.
This Act was conceived in response to widespread reports of unchecked appropriation of tribal lands in Scheduled Areas. Instances were documented where even small parcels of tribal land were transferred to non-tribals in exchange for a bottle of local brew. For tribal communities, land holds paramount importance as it constitutes their most valuable asset.

๐ต Women voters of India: A force to be reckoned with - Frontline

Factors influencing the trend
Factors influencing the trend are schemes that recognise womenโs agency, the impact of womenโs movements and civil society organisations, campaigning by political parties, migration of male members of families, and family and peer influences. โPeople in general and women in particular from lower economic and working-class backgrounds, both in rural and urban areas, show keen interest to vote. Affinity with a particular political party over generations also influences voting percentage. Though political parties make promises in their manifestos and implement various schemes, women decide their vote on the basis of their own analyses, independently, which they do not reveal to their family members,โ said Manimekalai.

Nearly 30 lakh workers die every year globally due to work-related accidents and diseases, according to a new report prepared by the International Labour Organization (ILO). More than 63% of these deaths are reported from the Asia-Pacific region.
Exposure to long working hours (55 hours or more per week) was the biggest โkillerโ, with almost 7.45 lakh people dying of it in 2016, followed by exposure to occupational particulate matter, gases, and fumes (4.5 lakh deaths) and occupational injuries (3.63 lakh deaths).
The report, titled โA Call for Safer and Healthier Working Environmentsโ, will be discussed at the 23rd World Congress on Safety and Health at Work, one of the largest international conferences on this subject, which began in Sydney on November 27. Citing the data on the fatal occupational injury rate, the report said mining and quarrying, construction, and utilities sectors were the three most hazardous sectors globally.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to radically alter almost all spheres of human life. This is because it allows for quick processing of vast amounts of data and makes predictions or decisions that would be otherwise rather impossible for humans to do in a reasonable amount of time. AI holds the potential to substantially improve efficiency, accuracy, and safety in many fields beyond human capabilities. But is that enough?
To maximise the benefits of AI while minimising the risks, it is important for stakeholders like business magnates, technologists, policymakers, and society as a whole to consider the ethical implications of AI and ensure that it is developed and used responsibly.

AI also poses several dangers, such as the potential for bias and discrimination if the data used to train AI systems, made by humans themselves, is not diverse or representative of all populations. There is also the risk of job loss as AI takes over tasks previously performed by humans. Additionally, there are widespread concerns about AI being used for malicious purposes, such as cyber attacks or weapon-building and spreading misinformation.
