OPINION | Economic history has long been chronicled through a male lens, emphasising the contributions of men and their viewpoints. Just look at the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. It has been awarded to 90 men since 1969 โ€” and just three women. The first, Elinor Ostrom, won in 2009 for explaining how local communities, most of them in developing countries, govern themselves. The second, Esther Duflo, won in 2019, for her experimental work in alleviating global poverty. Claudia Goldin was the third woman awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2023 for her work explaining why women earn less money than men even when they do the same work. https://epaper.thehindu.com/ccidist-ws/th/th_delhi/issues/57360/OPS/G3JBUEC0O.1+GDPBUF8AT.1.html

๐Ÿ”ต Towards a 21st-century Socialist Green Programme | Economic and Political Weekly

https://www.epw.in/engage/article/towards-21st-century-socialist-green-programme

In this fight against the climate crisis, we believe the Green Growth framework provides a transitional path towards a sustainable future but stops short of imagining a world beyond capitalism. On the other hand, the Degrowth/Post-Growth framework has a post-capitalist imagination but perhaps not a concrete transitional path from here to there. We need, however, _both_ a transitional path from capitalism to an alternate system as well as a vision of such a society, which is based on equality in rights, opportunities and outcomes; collective ownership of the means of production; peopleโ€™s well being over profits. In what follows, we imagine such a path โ€”  working on the complementarities instead of the differences between these two frameworks โ€” which we call Socialist Green Growth.

๐Ÿ”† What is detransition?

Detransition refers to the process of an individual who has previously transitioned from one gender to another (typically through gender-affirming measures like hormone therapy or surgery) deciding to revert to their assigned or birth gender. Detransitioning is a personal and complex decision that can involve ceasing or reversing the steps taken during gender transition. It's important to note that not all individuals who detransition do so for the same reasons, and their experiences and motivations can vary widely.

๐Ÿ”ต What has led to the Maratha quota agitation?

The demand for a quota for Marathas in government jobs and educational institutes started over 40 years ago. The demand has been a political issue and reason for mass protests in the state.

Here are some factors that have led to the Maratha quota:

๐Ÿ”˜Land fragmentation
๐Ÿ”˜Agrarian distress
๐Ÿ”˜Unemployment
๐Ÿ”˜Lack of educational opportunities
๐Ÿ”˜Caste-atrocities inflicted by the Marathas on the Dalit community

The first protest over this was held 32 years ago by Mathadi Labour Union leader Annasaheb Patil in Mumbai. In 2014, a committee headed by now BJP minister Narayan Rane, submitted a report to the government stating that 32 per cent of the population in the state was that of Marathas, who needed economic upliftment and thus a reservation was needed.

๐Ÿ† How To Manage Time When You Are Working

Firstly, note down your free time at home and workplace.

Usually the time available to us while we are working is in the early mornings as well as after work.

Notice the time when you are least tired. This would be usually in the forenoon.

Don't count your time by hours. Instead count it by half hours.

Prepare a plan for every 30 minutes which are available to you.

For example, if I wake up at 6AM and I go to work at 9AM, I have 6 half hours. Now I might require 2 half hours to get ready. This includes my daily chores and breakfast.

So I have 4 half hours which can be devoted to studies.

Keep a Daily Task Calendar. It can be a simple diary, a phone reminder or a post-it.

Your daily tasks should be manageable. Don't include more than your capacity. Be a human, not a super human.

Similarly, take note of your mood after coming from work. You might want to relax a bit, listen to music or watch tv for a while.

Fix a time, let's say 8PM when you will stop your relaxation and start studying.

Again, count your half hours. Let's say you go to sleep at 11PM. So you have 6 half hours. You might require 2 half hours for dinner and preparation for the next day.

This means, you have 4 half hours for studies. Take out your Daily Planner and check your to-do list for the day.

Start studying the portions designated for the day.

Remember to take a 5 minute break after every 30 minutes of study. Don't look at your phone or other distractions during these 30 minutes.

Increase your study hours during the weekend.

Always plan for 30 minutes. So your study time can be divided into 30 minute slots.

Gradually your study hours will increase and you will also start loving studies.

You might ask us what to study during free time at work. Keep PDFs and Audio Lectures handy which you can plug into whenever everyone is taking some time off.

P. S. This write up is based on a hypothetical timetable. Please make necessary changes according to your timetable.

๐Ÿ”ต OGBV stands for Online Gender-Based Violence.

According to the UN,
OGBV is any form of violence that is enabled by or perpetrated by using technology or a digital interface, such as the internet or smart devices. It can target one's gender, sex, or sexual orientation.

Some examples of OGBV include: Trolling, Insults, Body shaming, Sexualized abuse, Gendered abuse.

Online violence against women and girls has escalated rapidly since the onset of COVID-19. More women face various forms of online violence than men, resulting in poor engagement and active participation online.

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a human rights violation that affects not only physical health but also mental health. It may lead to self-harm, isolation, depression, and suicidal attempts.

Some tips for preventing GBV include:

๐Ÿ”นEducating yourself on the root causes of violence
๐Ÿ”นInterrupting sexist and discriminatory language
