Since the conflict began in #Amhara region of #Ethiopia, there are disturbing reports of health workers being targeted - detained, beaten, and killed. On Feb 4, Dr. Tsegahun Sime was reportedly taken by security forces in Bahir Dar and later found dead. Hospitals have been damaged in the fighting, and aid workers have lost their lives. With internet blackouts limiting information, these incidents need urgent independent investigation. Health facilities and health workers are not a target.

Rethinking the Weight of Our Exams
Those 4โ5 straight days of qualification exams in C2 were some of the most draining moments in medical school.
Now, with the exit exam placed right in the middle of the internship, it brings up a real conversation worth having: how much does this actually add to our competence and readiness to practice?
Does another high-stakes test strengthen training, or does it just pile more pressure onto students already juggling long hours, clinical responsibility, and emotional fatigue?
Maybe itโs time to revisit the structure, whether thatโs the C2 multi-day qualification exams, the timing of the exit exam, or both so assessment supports learning rather than overwhelming it.

Medical education already comes with a lot of pressure. When you add the difficult situation our country is facing, we understand that it can expose students to depression and even serious mental health struggles that may lead to loss of life.
Please, our students, whenever you face illness, family problems, or any other challenge, come and talk to us, your teachers. Share your thoughts with us. Maybe we are a little older and more experienced, and perhaps we can help you find a solution. See us as your older brothers, as your family.
And we, as a medical school, both as individual instructors and as institutions, must advise one another and remember that we have a responsibility. At the very least, we should do what we can to prevent this repeated tragedy and protect our students from such loss.

They are funded by the Ministry of Education for teaching purposes, while the Ministry of Health has no governing mandate over them. As a result, when clinical services halt in university hospitals, the situation is treated as a disruption to education rather than a healthcare emergency.
St. Paulโs Hospital Millennium Medical College stands as a rare exception, as its funding framework recognizes both teaching and healthcare delivery (2X).
The lesson is clear: this is not a failure of leadership, but a flaw in system design. Until patient care becomes a formal mandate, supported by clear authority and appropriate funding, most university hospitals will remain unable to respond effectively.

Currently, we have less than 30 specialists serving over 120 million people. We are the voice for the dead and the evidence for the living.
But here is the "Ethiopian Government Payroll Special".
Unlike our colleagues in other specialties, we don't have the luxury of a private clinic on the side. No one goes to a private forensic doctor, right? So, our income? Purely government.
(And honestly, this reality applies to members of many other departments too, but it hits hardest in Forensic Medicine, where the system needs you most and rewards you least.)
